FAQ

What is an RFC?

Drop Down

The Registro Federal de Contribuyentes (RFC) is Mexico's official tax-ID. SAT, the federal tax authority, issues it to every taxable person—both businesses and individuals. For companies, the RFC is the legal fingerprint you need to open bank accounts, invoice customers, pay taxes, import goods, and do pretty much anything else above board. Think of it as the business passport you have to show every time money changes hands.

How is an RFC different from a CURP?

RFC identifies both individuals and legal entities for tax purposes; CURP is the unique ID for natural persons. For business KYB you need the RFC

Why do I need to verify an RFC?

Drop Down

Glad you asked—there are four big reasons:

  • Staying compliant: CNBV's AML/KYB rules say you must confirm a merchant's RFC against SAT before you let them transact.
  • Keep your data clean. A single typo or recycled RFC can splatter bad data across onboarding, billing, and tax reporting
  • Match government oversight. SAT and other agencies hinge their risk models on RFC accuracy; aligning with them keeps audits painless.
  • Stop fraud early Fake or dormant RFCs are a common shell-company tactic. Real-time checks shut the door before the first peso moves.

Bottom line: no verified RFC, no safe business relationship.

Which data fields does the API return?

Drop Down

Our RFC Check API hands you a structured JSON that includes:

  • Legal company name
  • Trade (commercial) name
  • RFC code
  • Incorporation / registration date
  • Current SAT status (Activa, Suspensa, Baja, etc.)
  • Tax-compliance flag
  • Full registered address (street, city, state, postal)
  • Optional risk flags (e.g., PEP shareholder, embargo list match)

That's everything your compliance team needs in one hit.

How is RFC verification different from business-ID checks elsewhere?

Drop Down
  • Single source of truth. The SAT registry is the authoritative database—no state-by-state patchwork like the U.S. EIN system.
  • Universal coverage: A Mexican company must have an RFC; there's no "maybe they skipped it" scenario.
  • Live status codes.SAT marks entities Activa, Suspensa, or Baja in real time, so one lookup doubles as a health check.
  • Straight-forward format. RFCs follow a fixed 12- or 13-character scheme that encodes incorporation date—far easier to parse than, say, Brazil's layered CNPJ tree.

How long does it take to validate an RFC?

Drop Down

With Signzy? Real-time: typically under 150 ms.
